Soooo... My Dad is a fantastic artist. My Uncle Jerry is an amazing pin-up artist. And, I draw better than most 9th graders - but, I try. This is the first drawing I've done in three years, I think. I've just started. Here's what I've got so far.

Just Breathe

I was born and raised in Michigan. Michigan is a beautiful state, but primarily flat. The lower peninsula is mainly farmland with plenty of open fields, clear to eye - seeing for what seems like miles. In addition to the Great Lakes, it has about 12,000 inland lakes, 38 deep-water ports, more miles of coastline than any state but Alaska, and more lighthouses than any other U.S. state. As you start heading north towards Mackinaw Island, you'll see the landscape gradually change from wide open farm fields to rolling hills and coniferous forests. Charles and I would often escape to the upper peninsula and Mackinaw to rid ourselves of the blahs that tend to develop when you're surrounded by corn fields and cows :)

It's 5 a.m., here in Washington. It's 8 a.m. in Michigan. As I stood outside, watching the colors change over the roofs of the apartments - I inhaled. A deep, soul cleansing inhale. A wonderful smell filled my senses - pine, dew, bark, moss, grass, water. It reminded me of the upper peninsula. Of the many vacations and weekend jaunts we took, just the two of us. It made my heart a little homesick, but mostly - I felt love. A love for the State of Washington. For the trees and the mountains. Washington has taken every good thing about Michigan and multiplied it by 10,000. Every day, we're greeted with beauty.

As we drive down 27th, towards our home - it's deja vu. It reminds me of every time we'd driven through the beauty of the upper peninsula and promised ourselves that, one day, we'd live in a beautiful place - surrounded by nature. Inadvertently, we've done that. Thanks to Uncle Sam, we now live in one of the most beautiful places in the country. I think, at least.

I couldn't be happier with Washington as a State. I wish I had a few choice loved ones to share this with, but other than that - I'm completely content.

As long as I can smell the pine, dew, bark, moss, grass and water - I'll be a happy woman.

Mackinaw Island, the only town in Michigan where people abide without cars.
Their only means of transportation are bikes, horses and boats.

Main Street Mackinac Island. As you can see, no cars.

The Grand Hotel - Where you have to pay to stand on the front porch :) Very expensive, very luxurious.

The Mackinac Bridge which connects the lower and upper peninsulas of Michigan.

Horse and Carriage. Not the quickest way to get around the island, but the most fun :)

Another favorite getaway that wasn't far from my home was Frankenmuth. A Bavarian "village" with all the quaint and charm of a time long ago. It'll take me a while to find some good photos, so I'll pick up there in my next post.

That's a good question. I've thought about that a lot lately. Not something I feel that you need to spell out. But, it all starts with lies. When someone tries to convince you that you're perceiving something wrong. They tell you one thing, but your gut says another. Go with your gut.

I love Christmas. I love anything Christmas related. We all have our little guilty pleasures, little things that make us happy when we need it. Christmas is mine. My favorite website, and favorite store is Bronner's Christmas Wonderland. It is exactly as it sounds, a Christmas Wonderland:
